The BMI or the Body Mass Index is also known as Quetelet index. This value is derived from the mass and height of the person or individual. The BMI of the individual is calculated by dividing the body mass by the square of the height of the person and the unit is expressed in unit of kg/m2. The unit is this because of mass being in kilograms and height in meters.

There is a table or chart having BMI displayed as a function of mass and height which is represented using contour lines or different BMI categories is used to show how BMI can be determined.

The tissue mass of an individual that is muscle , fat and bone is used to quantify by using the BMI for an individual. This quantification helps in declaring an individual into three categories. The three categories are : –

  1. Under weight.
  2. Normal weight
  3. Over weight or obese.

There has always been some conflict as to what will be the dividing lines between these categories and where should they be placed. The various commonly accepted BMI ranges are :-

  1. Under Weight – 18.5 kg/m2.
  2. Normal Weight – 18.5 kg/m2 to 25 kg/m2.
  3. Over weight or obese – 25 kg/m2 to 30 kg/m2.

People from the continent of Asia have very different perspective for BMI, their percentage of body fats is different and they are at a greater risk that the people living in the Europe. Also the people have higher chances of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and cardio vascular dieses if they are under the cut off set by the WHO for the overweight that is 25 kg/m2. This observed risk varies among the Asian people.

The history of BMI goes long back. It was devised by a Belgian astronomer , mathematician and who was also a statistian and sociologist from the year 1830 to year 1850 and during that time he developed “ social physics ”.He is none other than the famous Adolphe Quetelet. This idea of BMI that is the ratio of body mass to square of the person height was coined or published in a paper in the July 1972 edition by Ansel Keys in the Journal of Chronic Diseases and also various others. In this edition Mr. Keys was on point that till then no other measure product is available and if BMI gives satisfactory results then it should be used so that we get results regarding obesity.

In the western societies there was an increase in people getting obese or fat and hence the interest in calculating the BMI was increasing among the people. Keys correctly suggested that the BMI was not made for individual calculation or evaluation rather it was made for the population. But still since the BMI was simple it was used in diagnosis or preliminary diagnosis. There are other metrics like waste circumference that can be useful in measuring the BMI.

The universal unit of BMI is kg/m2. But if the unit changes to pounds and inches for body mass and height then a conversion of 703 is multiplied that is 703(kg/m2)(lb/in2) is multiplied and applied. The units are usually omitted when the BMI is used formally.

The formula becomes : –

BMI = masskg / height2m = (masslb / height2in ) * 703.

The BMI is basically used to measure a person thinness or thickness so that the patients that have weight problems can interact with the health professionals more objectively and also the problem can be known and the required medicine can be given. The main of BMI was to classify the physically inactive population or the average sedative application and also the people having average body composition. The value recommendation for these individuals for the BMI is : –

  1. 5 kg/m2 to 25 kg/m2 is considered as optimal weight.
  2. BMI between 25 kg/m2 to 30 kg/m2 is considered that a person is overweight.
  3. If the BMI is below 18.5 kg/m2 then that person is underweight.
  4. If the BMI is more than 30 kg/m2 then the person is considered as obese.

There are various people like the football linemen sometimes have a high muscle and fat ratio and hence may have a BMI that is exceedingly high as compared to or relative to their body fat percentage.

The BMI has various scalability. It is directly proportional to the mass of the human body and inversely proportional to the height of the human body which is squared. If the mass scales triples with the height and all the other body dimensions double then the BMI instead of being the same gets doubled. What this leads to is that the people having higher heights or the tall people have the BMI that is very high as compared to their body fats. There is another index called as the Ponderal Index that takes height as the cube that is the power of three.

There are other problems for the taller people. It is not always that the tall people are always scaling up on the shorter people but the body shape and frame of these tall people are not in accordance with the height hence they look a bit awkward. A mathematics lecturer from the University of Utah ,Nick Korevaar , suggested that instead of cubing or squaring the height we should use exponent somewhere between 2.3 to 2.7. In large population the BMI is an excellent tool to find the overweight and obese people as told by Carl Lavie but he also considers the fact that the BMI is not suitable for determining the fatness of the individuals. There are various categories of BMI. These are given below : –

  1. Very severely under weight – 15 kg/m2.
  2. Severely under weight – 15 kg/m2 to 16 kg/m2.
  3. Under weight – from 16 kg/m2 to 18.5 kg/m2.
  4. Normal ( healthy weight ) – from 18.5 kg/m2 to 25 kg/m2.
  5. Over weight – 25 kg/m2 to 30 kg/m2.
